Four Common Causes of Wrinkles

Research states that women emphasize accumulating wrinkles, younger and younger. One in five women stresses over these creases and lines before reaching their mid-20s. Wrinkles are creases in the skin that typically appear on older people. However, other factors can cause wrinkles.

Instead of spending copious amounts of dollars on wrinkles, find out more information below on what you can do to minimize them and how we can help.

FOUR COMMON CAUSES OF WRINKLES

  1. Ultraviolet (UV) Light: Sun exposure is the most common cause of skin damage and wrinkles. UV rays alter the skin and cause irregular spots and pigmentation, making the skin appear older. Additionally, it promotes the formation of free radicals within the skin and damages elastin fibers in the skin, causing wrinkles and even skin cancer.
  2. Aging: Elastin and collagen fibers provide the skin with strength and youthfulness. As we age, these fibers reduce and cause wrinkles. The subcutaneous layer is below the surface of our skin and contains fat that supplies form and structure. This layer becomes thinner the older we get and causes your skin to sag.
  3. Smoking: The formation of fine lines and wrinkles from smoking are also common. Research proves that people who have never smoked appear to have fewer wrinkles compared to those who do smoke.
  4. Facial Expressions: Squinting and frowning are the most common cause of crow’s feet around the eyes. Frowning can develop deeper wrinkles on the forehead as well.

ANTI AGING & WRINKLE PREVENTION

Wrinkle formation is natural in the aging process. While we all will experience them, there are ways to reduce and treat the appearance of wrinkles.

Factors that contribute to premature aging of the skin include:

  • Sun exposure
  • Smoking
  • Heredity
  • Skin type

TREATMENT

Treatments for aging skin and wrinkles can range from topical products to cosmetic procedures.

Your skincare regimen should include the following steps to help reduce the signs of aging:

  • Step 1 – Prepare Skin with a Cleanser
  • Step 2 – Repair Damage with a Serum/Antioxidants
  • Step 3 – Maintain & Protect Skin with a Sunscreen or Sunblock
  • Step 4 – Hydrate with a Moisturizer

In addition to these steps, active ingredients are key for a good skin care regimen:

Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs): AHAs produce improvements in the appearance of wrinkles by exfoliating the top damaged layer of the skin while stimulating the growth of new, more radiant surface skin cells. They also increase the absorption of other beneficial skin products such as retinoids and antioxidants. For example, glycolic acid, a popular chemical exfoliant, is a derivative of sugarcane and is known to boost the production of collagen and elastin in the body, reducing the signs of aging in the skin.

Antioxidants: Antioxidants protect the skin by limiting free radical production, which can damage the skin. With daily use, they can reduce lentigines (sunspots), help fight visible signs of aging and calm skin inflammations. Several antioxidants provide the skin with hydration and increase moisture retention to help revitalize dull-looking skin. Examples of antioxidants include vitamins A, C and E, resveratrol, and green tea which may help prevent skin cancer. Not all antioxidants are created equal. Some are more potent than others. Ask your dermatologist what works best for your skin type.

Retinoids: Retinoids are forms of vitamin A and are essential for aging skin. Their function is to repair photo-damaged (sun-damaged) skin, reduce fine lines and wrinkles by increasing collagen and hyaluronic acid production. They also stimulate the production of blood vessels in the skin to improve skin color. Additional benefits include fading age spots and softening rough patches. They have to be used in the right concentration to see visible results.

Moisturizers: Moisturizers are the key to wrinkle reduction. Selecting the right moisturizer is an essential part of building your skincare regimen. Avoid scented or glittery lotions that may contain alcohol. Alcohol can increase dryness. In contrast, hyaluronic acid is a powerful moisturizer and contributes to keeping the skin supple and hydrated. It can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water compared to other polymers. It can be found in combination with other creams or as a stand-alone product. Keeping skin hydrated is an integral part of having healthy, wrinkle-free skin.

Injectable cosmetic products can treat and prevent wrinkles, as well — each product and procedure address different skin concerns and yields a variety of results. Doctors may recommend one specific treatment or a combination to provide each patient with the best-customized result.

PREVENTION

Prevent wrinkle formation by using these techniques:

  • Wear sunscreen. Not only will this help prevent wrinkles, but it will also reduce your risk of developing skin cancer. Using SPF of 30 or higher is the most effective step you can take to prevent wrinkles.
  • Avoid tanning beds. Not only can tanning be addictive, but research proves that 90 percent of non-melanoma cancers are contributed to UV radiation. Protect your skin and stay away from tanning beds.
  • Wear protective clothing. Sunglasses to help protect the delicate skin around your eyes. Squinting forms grooves in your skin, which will later develop into wrinkles.
  • Consume Vitamin D. Vitamin D is an essential source for bone strength and your overall health.
  • Stop smoking. Not only is it beneficial for your overall health and can help you live longer, but it prevents the acceleration of aging.
  • Minimize alcohol consumption. Alcohol dehydrates the body and skin. Switch to water or more hydrating options to invest in proper skin health.
  • Take care of yourself. Get enough sleep at night, eat a balanced diet and routine exercise to maintain a healthy lifestyle. This can improve the quality of your skin, amongst other aspects of your life.
