When it comes to a skincare routine for men, it’s generally kept simple, which isn’t bad. In fact, at the Dermatology Center of Skin Health, PLLC, we recommend that our patients, including men, follow four simple steps. Continue reading to learn more about how you can choose the best skincare regimen for you.
EVALUATING YOUR SKIN TYPE
Before choosing a regimen, you must first assess your skin and skin type. Ultimately, this will help you select products that will work for you and will also save you the hassle of using products that don’t.
As you may know, there are many different skin types, including sensitive, dry, normal, oily and combination skin. How can you tell which is your skin type? According to the American Academy of Dermatology, there are ways to tell your skin type including:
- Sensitive skin: using products may burn your skin after you use it
- Dry skin: your skin may flake, be itchy or feel rough
- Normal skin: your skin is clear and not sensitive to products you’re using
- Oily skin: your skin may feel greasy or look shiny
- Combination skin: your skin may feel oily in some areas while dry and itchy in other areas
Being able to identify what type of skin you have will allow you to choose products that will make your skin flourish.
CHOOSING YOUR SKINCARE ROUTINE
While there isn’t a one size fits all skincare routine, our dermatologists recommend a simple four-step routine to start with, including utilizing a cleanser, retinol, moisturizer and sunscreen.
CLEANSE
Cleansing the skin is the first, and some may argue the most important step. Using a cleanser to clean your face two times a day is the most simple and effective way to remove dirt and oil from your skin. However, if you find yourself sweating more from working out or playing sports, you can wash your face additional times.
When washing your face, you need to consider a cleanser for your skin type. By clinking on the cleansers below, you can assess which cleanser is best for you. The Dermatology Center for Skin Health, PLC has many cleansers that you could try:
- Benzoyl Peroxide 5%
- Benzoyl Peroxide 10%
- Gly Sal 2-2 Cleanser
- Ultra Gentle Cleanser
- Green Tea Fortified Cleanser
- Prescribed Solutions – Starting Up Face
- Prescribed Solutions – Surface Improvement
- Essential Antioxidant Cleanser
PROTECT
Protecting your skin is a step that a lot of people forget to do. Choosing a sunblock for your skin is essential. Our dermatologists recommend having sunscreen with at least an SPF of 30 and one that is broad-spectrum. Unfortunately, many people don’t use enough sunscreen. For example, if you are outside for eight hours, you should be using a full eight oz bottle of sunscreen!
The good news is that we have many different types of sunscreen for different skin types, including:
- Antioxidant Moisturizing Sunscreen
- Green Tea Mattifying Mineral Powder Sunscreen
- Sunscreen SPF 30
- Sheer Physical Sunscreen
- Tinted Physical Sunscreen
- Vitamin C Antioxidant Sunscreen
- Elta MD UV Clear SPF 46
- Elta MD UV SPF 30 Body
REPAIR
Repair your skin with retinol for anti-aging benefits. Using retinol can help reduce your fine lines and wrinkles and increase the production of collagen. Additionally, retinol can be used as a preventive option for pre-cancers like actinic keratosis. We have many retinol options, including:
- Retinol Smoothing Pads 2.5x
- Retinol Smoothing Pads 5x
- Retinol Smoothing Serum 2x
- Retinol Smoothing Serum 3x
- Retinol Smoothing Serum 5x
- Retinol Smoothing Serum 7.5x
- Retinol Smoothing Serum 10x
MOISTURIZE
Make sure to keep your skin hydrated with moisturizer. By moisturizing your face daily, you can reduce your chance of having dry or oily skin. When applying moisturizer to your face, use a circular motion. The massaging effect will help stimulate blood flow and encourage cell generation. Like your cleanser, make sure your moisturizer is oil-free.
At the Dermatology Center for Skin Health, PLLC, we have many moisturizers, including:
- Fortified Facial Cream
- Moisturizing Brightening Cream
- Nourish and Repair Cream
- Ultra-Lite Facial Cream
- Prescribed Solutions – Cream No Sugar
- Glycol 10% Facial Cream
- Glycol 15% Facial Cream
- Glycol 20% Facial Cream
Now, with all that being said, if you choose to include more steps or skincare products in your skincare routine, that’s okay! These are four basic steps and products that can fit your lifestyle and skin type.
