Nowadays, face masks are commonplace and are used by many to exfoliate and protect the skin. But not many people know that face masks were some of the first cosmetic products used to maintain beauty. Even as early as 3000 BC, face masks were used in beauty rituals in ancient cultures. In early Indian culture, for example, various herbs, plants, roots and flowers were mixed to make many different kinds of masks. Herbs were combined in varied proportions to accommodate individual skin types and achieve desired outcomes.
Madame Rowley invented the first official face mask as we know it today in the 19th century. It was initially known as a “Toilet Mask” or “face glove.” It’s purpose was to “bleach, purify and preserve the complexion” of the skin.

HOW DO FACE MASKS WORK?
Face masks are engineered with several properties that allow them to address your skin needs. Their occlusive properties, highly concentrated key ingredients, and length of time applied to the skin will enable them to penetrate your skin and address your skin concerns effectively.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF FACE MASKS?
Masks have many different functions, depending on the ingredients found in them. They are formulated with active ingredients to address acne-prone skin, skin pigmentation, dry skin or even fine lines and wrinkles. Masks help trap those active ingredients in the skin, providing a deep cleanse and draw out impurities and oils from the skin.
WHEN SHOULD FACE MASKS BE APPLIED?
Always apply a face mask to clean and dry skin so you’re not layering a face mask over dirt and bacteria.
At the Dermatology Center for Skin Health, PLLC, we are excited to announce that we are now carrying medical-grade masks targeted to specific skin types. Our team of medical professionals has hand-picked all of our products to ensure our patients have access to safe, effective skin treatment options. Discover more about our masks below.
- Purifying Mint Mask: This mask is formulated to draw sebum, pollutants, impurities and bacteria out of the skin. It features an array of powerful yet gentle, key ingredients including sulfur 1.0%, jojoba seed oil and wheat germ oil that calm redness, smooth the look of wrinkles, fight blemishes and deeply hydrate the skin. This mask is excellent for all skin types, especially acne-prone skin. It reduces the appearance of pores, minimizes blackheads and blemishes and enhances overall clarity for a refreshed complexion. It can be used two to three times a week (or as directed by a physician).
- Charcoal Detox Mask: This mask contains sulfur 10%, white charcoal powder and kaolin to absorb oils effectively, impurities and other toxins from the skin. This powerful combination of ingredients works to draw out all the toxins from the skin, fight against breakouts, and yield a clearer complexion. This mask is excellent for all skin types, especially acne-prone and oily skin. Because excessive drying of the skin may occur, start with one application weekly, then gradually increase if needed (or directed by a physician).
- Advanced Pumpkin Mask: This mask combines enzymes and antioxidants from advanced pumpkin extract, along with vitamins and minerals in a rich, creamy, self-warming application to reduce pore size, cleanse, hydrate and rejuvenate the skin. This mild formula contains kaolin to absorb dirt and excess oils, advanced pumpkin enzymes to increase cellular regeneration and refine pore size and time-released Vitamin E micro-beads that activate upon contact with the skin to replenish moisture. It complements anti-aging, hyperpigmentation and acne regimens and leaves the skin hydrated, refined and radiant. This mask is excellent for all skin types, especially for dry, normal and sensitive skin, and it can be used two to three times a week (or as directed by a physician).
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF SCRUBS?
Using a scrub (or exfoliating) helps remove dead cells built-up on the top layer of the skin, causing the skin to appear dull and lackluster. After their removal, the skin will appear brighter, smoother and more vibrant. Regular exfoliation also allows for better absorption of anything you apply over it (like serums or moisturizers) because you removed the dull, dry, dead layer on top of your skin.
At the Dermatology Center for Skin Health, PLLC, we recently launched a new, medical-grade scrub called Scrub A Dub. This scrub contains powerful microdermabrasion resurfacing ingredients that remove dead cells and debris from the skin’s surface to reduce fine lines and wrinkles and diminish the appearance of hyperpigmentation. Each use improves skin tone, texture and elasticity, as non-abrasive exfoliation from pumice granules smooth dull, dry skin to a healthy, radiant finish. This scrub can be used two or three times per week (or as directed by a physician) and works great for dry, normal and sensitive skin.
