Varicose veins are visibly twisted or enlarged veins on the body, typically affecting the lower region of the legs. Varicose veins have the potential to cause discomfort or aching pain and should be treated soon after symptoms arise.

WHAT ARE VARICOSE VEINS?
Varicose veins or spider veins (a milder variation of varicose veins) are, for the most part, a cosmetic concern and can be resolved through diagnostic skincare treatment. Unfortunately, for some, varicose veins can be associated with aches, pains, and bodily discomfort.
WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON SYMPTOMS AND RISK FACTORS OF VARICOSE VEINS?
Varicose veins can be caused by any number of factors, including weak veins that work double to carry blood from the heart to the other functioning parts of the body. When these veins are weakened or damaged, it is possible for blood to return to the vein, causing a bulge. Other factors include:
- Age
- Sex
- Pregnancy
- Family history
- Obesity
On top of risk factors, patients may notice a number of symptoms that may indicate varicose.
Painless signs of varicose veins may include:
- Visibly dark blue or purple veins
- Visibly twisted or bulging veins—like cords appearing on the leg
Painful signs of varicose veins may include:
- Achy feeling in the legs
- Burning or cramping in muscles or swelling in the lower region of the legs
- Itching feeling around certain parts of the body, particularly around the vein
- Change in skin color on or near the location of varicose
HOW DO DERMATOLOGISTS TREAT VARICOSE VEINS?
There are a few effective ways that a dermatologist may treat varicose veins.
Self-Care
Daily exercises including the elevation of your legs, walks (every 30 minutes), avoiding hot baths for long periods of time, and other self-care tips. Although self-care cannot eliminate present varicose, they can help to prevent future instances. Your dermatologist can provide more information.
Compression Stockings
Stockings apply pressure to the leg or limb with varicose veins to move blood back into the heart. The steady pressure of the stocking reduces swelling and the risk of blood clots.
Sclerotherapy
Sclerotherapy is the most common treatment for leg veins. Dermatologists have improved sclerotherapy over the years, making it a safer form of medicine and yielding better results.
Vascular Laser Treatment
Vbeam Lasers deliver laser energy to specific blood vessels or melanin-pigmented areas in the skin which absorb the Vbeam’s light. The veins will darken over a few months and ultimately disappear with successful treatment.
HOW CAN I PREVENT VARICOSE VEINS?
The best way to prevent varicose veins is by improving the body’s blood flow. These preventive measures double as a treatment to alleviate discomfort in the presence of varicose.
Change from seated to standing position on a regular basis
- Maintain a high-fiber and low-salt diet
- Exercise regularly
