What To Do Before Getting Lip Fillers

According to the 2017 American Society of Plastic Surgeons, surgical lip augmentation has increased five percent since 2016 and 60 percent since 2000. Additionally, soft tissue fillers have increased by 312 percent since 2000. Why are lip fillers becoming more popular?

Fillers restore youthful fullness to your lips, face and hands. This cosmetic treatment is valid for a variety of reasons, such as removing scars, minimizing fine lines, erasing fine lines, shaping rotund lips and more.

If you are interested in finding out more about the lip filler procedure and what you should do before the procedure, continue reading below.

DO YOUR RESEARCH

We recommend that you research the type of filler you should get if you are committed to getting lip fillers. It is valuable to gather information from trustworthy resources like the American Academy of Dermatology Association (AAD) or DermNet NZ

Before making an appointment, accumulate trustworthy and beneficial information concerning the specific type of facial filler you are interested in receiving. Find out particulars such as different types of fillers, how the procedure works, expectations and goals, etc.

We recommend for you to be confident in your decision to receive any dermal filler. To do so, conduct the proper amount of research from reliable sources and get a picture of what to expect the lip filler process to be like with your specific healthcare provider.

If you have any questions in regards to the procedure, don’t hesitate to contact your dermatologist and set up a consultation. Some offices will even provide you with a free consultation.

DEVELOP A LIST OF QUESTIONS

Write up a list of questions for your dermatologist. Cover any concerns and inquiries about the procedure. Here are some questions to consider when speaking with your dermatologist:

  1. How long do fillers last?
  2. How many treatments will I have to get?
  3. How big can a person’s lips get?
  4. How much do fillers cost?
  5. How spread-out do my treatments have to be?
  6. What benefits can I receive from getting lip fillers?
  7. What options do I have for lip filler injections?
  8. What can I do after my treatment to maintain long-lasting results?
  9. What possible side effects am I prone to based on my medical history?
  10. Are fillers good?

HOW DO DERMAL FILLERS WORK?

Dermal fillers can do more than just plump the lips. Dermal fillers also lessen facial lines and restore that youthful glow in the face.

According to the AAD, here are some general guidelines for fillers:

  • The treatment takes between 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the filler used.
  • You may feel a burning sensation while the filler is being injected.
  • Dermatologists recommend not overdoing fillers to create a more natural approach with the results.

Different fillers intend to have specific characteristics from texture to injection depth. Your provider can help determine which filler is best for you and your distinct goals. Dermatologists use softer fillers in the lips and sturdier products for cheekbone enhancement.

Below are lip fillers the Dermatology Center of Skin Health, PLLC, use for treatment:

  • Plump the lips: Restylane, Belotero
  • Smooth vertical lip lines: Restylane, Belotero

AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR LIP FILLERS?

You are the right candidate for dermal fillers if you are:

  • Healthy
  • A non-smoker
  • Have realistic treatment goals
  • Maintain good skin health

UNDERSTAND THE RISKS

Keep in mind that fillers are not permanent, and they do not look the same on everyone. Make sure to speak with your dermatologist to understand precisely how the procedure will go and expectations for results. Though not common, potential side effects include:

  • Over-filled appearance to the treated area
  • Swelling and/or bruising
  • Temporary redness
  • Temporary numbness
  • Lumps or hard regions of the injection site
  • Hypersensitivity

Ice and a massage will provide relief for side effects experienced immediately following treatment. Side effects should continue to improve within a few days after treatment.

ARE LIP FILLERS SAFE?

Take a deep breath because the AAD states that fillers are one of the safest cosmetic treatments available. Any severe complications from dermal fillers are uncommon. Risks and side effects vary depending on the specific type of filler used for treatment.

FIND THE RIGHT PROFESSIONAL

There are several different types of dermal fillers. Each differs in chemical makeup, longevity and has different levels of softness. For example, doctors will use softer fillers in the lips and sturdier products for cheekbone enhancement.

It’s pertinent that a licensed medical professional performs neurotoxin (ie: Botox, Dysport, etc) and dermal filler injections. At the Dermatology Center for Skin Health, PLLC, our doctors perform all dermal fillers. Drs. Maouad and Gharib have extensive experience with a variety of dermal fillers, which reduces the risk of side effects and increases patient satisfaction with proper product recommendations and placement.

BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER THE PROCEDURE

Before The Procedure

Before the procedure, it is recommended to speak with your dermatologist for a consultation. This is where you will get the chance to discuss goals, expectations and the details of what you will experience. You will also talk about your medical history and background from allergies to any previous heart conditions.

At the Dermatology Center for Skin Health, PLLC, we want you to feel comfortable and confident that your procedure will go smoothly in the safe hands of healthcare professionals.

During The Procedure

The dermal filler specific to your procedure will be injected just below the skin surface. Other materials are implanted in the subcutaneous area to restore or replace fat. A topical numbing agent may be applied to ease the discomfort. The use of nerve block injections is given before the treatment to aid in numbing the lips.

After, your dermatologist will carefully mark the areas being injected with the use of fine needles to inject the substance into your lips. Ice may be given to ease any discomfort and swelling.

After The Procedure

You should be able to see a difference immediately following your procedure. After you heal, your lips should feel plump and natural.

IS THERE DOWNTIME?

Recovery time varies for each patient. You may resume normal activities almost immediately with one exception: We recommend no strenuous exercise for 24 to 48 hours following treatment. This recommendation will reduce swelling and bruising as well as prevent the migration of the product. Your doctor will explain in detail the known side effects and risks as well as detailed post-treatment care with you at your appointment.

Dermal fillers last from several months to several years, depending on the filler used and the patient. Maintaining good skin health will improve longevity.
